One of my favorite movies is "A Christmas Story" which is based upon the memoirs of Jean Shepherd. I'm not saying that my writer's voice is anything like Jean's. But, I will say that I admire his voice and aspire to his level of genuine warmth. I'll probably never get there. However, it doesn't hurt to try.
